I was going to skip this birthday; 59 is just depressing! It feels like an ending. A friend suggested I follow in her footsteps and go straight to 60. Be 60 for two years. Nines are endings but tens are beginnings! Do you think that's true? Feels true.
This has been an action packed year with so much to be grateful for. I haven't had birthday depression since I turned 30 (that was a hard one) and it snuck up on me this year. Truth is 59 makes me evaluate where I am, where I've been and where I'm going and I don't like some of the things my evaluation reveals.
In another day or two I'll pull myself up by my bootstraps and make a plan for being who I want to be. For the next few days I'm just gonna eat the Best Ever Banana Cake. I might eat it all!

Happy Birthday, Lola!
ReplyDeleteI will definitely have to try this cake! The only birthday that bothered me was my 40th - people kept telling me how wonderful it was to turn 40, and that seemed to make it worse!
I'll be 49 next month, so I'm right there with you - I've been reflective, too, but the best thing is I find myself returning to and focusing on the things I've always loved, yet somehow set aside - like photography! I wish you every happiness on your journey!
Thank you Susan! I want to restructure my time so I actually DO more of the things I keep meaning to do. I've been working on a novel for a couple of years and I have ideas for a few more. Why don't I do the things I want to do? The eternal question.... In the mean time this cake is nice consolation!
ReplyDeleteYour post reminds me of what Oprah says: "Be the best that you can be." Sage advice. Happy, happy birthday, Lola! Your cake looks scrumptious and a fitting one to celebrate your day!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Lola! I have to say turning 50 bothered me a bit, but turning 60 bothered me a lot more until I realized how lucky I was to reach 60! My very good friend, who never smoked, died at 58 of lung cancer! Birthdays are a blessing...have a wonderful blessed birthday! Looking forward to reading that novel!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Lola! Best ever banana cake is exactly what the doctor ordered for a 'big' birthday! Sounds like you're having a great year- keep enjoying;-)
