Cheating on Winter Pea Soup |
I've been telling myself (and my husband) that I would get back into my bread baking routine for several months now. I was a regular bread baker for quite a while. I don't know what happened. Life I guess. Actually, I realized just now it was my mother's illness and death 2.5 years ago. Time to get going on the things I like to do! I know she would want me to as she took great pride in any and all of her children's accomplishments.
So it was a simple one day bread Thursday but definitely a delicious addition to the soup. Just a basic white bread with oatmeal and flax seed. It made a delicious ham and cheese panini to go with our soup!
I know this is the post that never ends but moving on to the coeur á la créme. Something was lost here for me. There was no, absolutely none, liquid to drain out. Cream cheese, sugar, whipped cream of course it was good but I just couldn't find the point of it. That being said, I made this while visiting my grandson and my daughter in law loved it. I felt like it needed to be used IN something. Like a twist on smores maybe?

Soup and sandwich, I like your idea for a meal. I enjoyed this soup too. The best part is the bread, I like all of them with oatmeal. Wonderful Guyla!
ReplyDeleteI added a ham sandwich to this soup to make a meal too - it just seems to me that pea soup needs a ham sandwich! Your bread looks beautiful, as does your super-green soup! Nice work!

ReplyDeleteI find bread making very grounding - and it can be as simple (no knead) or as complicated (three day breads) as you want it to be.

Hi Guyla, I liked the soup too - quick and easy but tasty. I was not a huge fan of the coeur a la creme either, but other people begged to differ, so heck, what do I know? Have a great weekend.

ReplyDeleteThis is a great Post, Guyla. I also liked the soup but wouldn't mind if the flavor was jazzed up a bit. I strained mine and would not do that again. I'll trade a quarter slice of my corn bread for a few slices of your oatmeal/flax bread. It looks delicious. Although we can buy all kinds of great breads now, nothing beats making it in your own kitchen, does it? I think it's the smell. You have never made bread since I've been a Dorista and that's been, as you said, about 2 1/2 years. Yep, if you enjoy it, get back at it. The coeur was just special and different and something to have on Valentine's Day or a special, special occasion. It's very rich and I could only handle a small amount. I got no liquid either but I think the "whey" drains when you're using fromage blanc as the French do. Sometimes Dorie forgets that we use different ingredients in America. Remember the plastic wrap that wouldn't melt? Such a nice Post.
ReplyDeleteI liked this soup too. The paninis look like the perfect pairing. Yum! I'm not sure about the coeur a la creme, though I'll eat anything resembling s'mores.

ReplyDeleteSomeday when I get more of a kitchen I will tackle bread backing. For now I"m happy not to. lol. I loved the soup and even the lettuce part which was a nice surprise.

Your bread looks wonderful... I don't know if you noticed the loaf in my pic, my husband is a fairly regular bread baker. It is such a wonderfully grounding thing to make. So glad you enjoyed the soup.

Nothing like baking bread at home and enjoying the wonderful results! I cannot wait to see more of the bread that you bake, I am curious to see which ones you will make! A grilled sandwich with homemade bread is a perfect accompaniment for homemade soup. Glad this soup was a keeper for you. We enjoyed the coeur á la créme, especially my partner, who likened it to a crustless cheesecake.

ReplyDeleteApologize for the late comment- I had too much fun running around seeing the Barefoot Contessa and cooking and ended up with a miserable cold (but it was worth it). Glad I had so much soup to enjoy ~though I would prefer left over coeur a la creme :) I actually just found my bread cloche this weekend and pondered why I haven't baked in years. I blame Atkins but regardless feel even more inspired by your post and renewed interest in homemade bread. Thanks for sharing ~
