FFwD - Nutella Tartine or KISS

Homemade orange marmalade!  Doesn't it look delicious?  Well its not!  My husband, who will quite frankly eat most anything, told me to throw it out.  If you've ever made orange marmalade you know its kind of preparation intensive.  So for one of the quickest, easiest French Friday recipes we've had, seriously, maybe 15 minutes, I spent 1/2 a day working on it, more if you count the time it took trying to find bitter oranges and hazelnuts...and I didn't find either!

This little tartine is simply buttered toast, orange marmalade, nutella, salt and hazelnuts.  Dorie suggest using brioche or challah but I used slices from the incredibly good white loaf I had baked for Tuesdays with Dorie.

Since the orange marmalade was a bust I used the wine and raspberry jelly I made this summer and since I couldn't find hazelnuts I used pecans.

I loved the sweet and slightly tart taste of the jelly with the buttery goodness of the bread accented by the deliciousness of the nutella.  Add the crunch of the pecans then the bite of the salt and voilá, a quick and easy and very grown up treat!

To top it off,  I ran around town to the grocery stores I thought most likely to have Seville or Blood oranges for the marmalade and hazelnuts for the tartine with no luck.  Last night I was in the small and often under stocked grocery closest to me only to find Blood Oranges for 99¢ a pound!  I bought one and used it in a much needed drink!

    I love pecans - I am sure they were perfect on top of that slice of heaven.

  3. Sorry that your marmalade was a waste. I've done lots of running around for these Dorie recipes over the past year and a half. Now I've learned to make do much of the time and get great results with substitutions. It is fun to learn about and to try new things, however, I've also learned that there are lots of these new things that my family thinks are a not very good and I've had to waste some of my efforts. But on the whole, I've found many new combinations that we do like and I'm better off having all these experiences. Our raspberry jam was a good choice for us on this one.

  4. I made marmalade, too. But I put amaretto in it. I want to feel shame, but I just can't. ;) Good call on the pecans - I bet that was delicious!

  5. Oh dear. So annoying when a time consuming recipe doesn't turn out. Sorry to hear that. I agree that a blood orange cocktail was definitely in order.

    I also find it so interesting that our little group is all spread out in different corners of the world and we all have trouble finding different ingredients. For example, finding hazelnuts in Germany is no problem at all. Heck, at my local grocery store I can buy them whole, shelled, chopped, or ground. But if I wanted to buy pecans, that would send me on a treasure hunt all over town and probably cost me a fortune if I was actually able to find them.

  8. Oh Lola! Is there any way to salvage the marmalade? Maybe swirl it into a yellow cake batter? Your gin and tonic looks fantastic, with that faint pink hue! It's been forever since I had one, let alone with a delicious blood orange.

  10. Oh no!! What a bummer! I think this is the year I'm going to start preserving things. I love the idea of it, but at the same time, it intimidates me. You're right, though. If it doesn't work out, just toss it and pour a drink. lol

  15. Oh, Guyla, you make me laugh. But, I feel your pain. I went non-home-made with the marmalade so the Tartine took me an hour, tops. But, you get the prize for effort. And, you had a good story to tell. I am the Queen of Failures but I also pick myself up, brush myself off, and try, try again. That's why the Dorista's love us.

  17. Awww, it's really too bad all those effort amounted to disappointment. But the learning is half of what it's about too. Glad the simple solution worked out well in the end and you enjoyed the tartine. I went homemade all the way: bread+marmalade+nutella but only because they are all already made. I would definitely not go out of my way to make everything from scratch just because. Good effort on your part!

  20. So sorry the marmalade didn't work out! The last jam I tried to make was a lemon one and that also didn't turn out so I feel your pain after spending so much time on it.

    Your tartine looks lovely, I bet it was delicious with the raspberry wine jelly (now that sounds amazing!) and the pecans. I can never find hazelnuts around here either so I order them in bulk from amazon and store them in the freezer. Love the drink shot with the blood orange, yum!

  21. I attempted marmalade this past fall and it was a complete disaster. I completely understand how you feel. On the other hand, I made a terrific Blood Orange Sparkler that I adore with that rosemary simple syrup. It's 1.5 ounces blood orange juice, 1.5 ounces rosemary simple syrup, 1.5 ounces gin, and 1.5 ounces club soda - great color, and very refreshing!

  25. This was hilarious- laughing with you, not at you :) I love it when folks talk about the real life issues and family reactions that they encounter. I find it more inspirational than the posts that look like they came out of Bon Appetit...as much as I enjoy those gorgeous success stories, I need the motivation to overcome obstacles as they pop up. And you had me chuckling with the opening remark. Yes, that marmalade did look delicious. And yes, I have had some wonderfully honest comments such as your hubby's from my own loving family. Keeping it real :) Sign me up for the gin and tonic.....

  28. Thanks for reinforcing my decision to shop instead of make marmalade! But so sorry for your 1/2 day of wasted effort :-(. The drink, however, with the blood orange must have taken the edge off. They have blood oranges in our new grocery right now as well - they are just so gorgeous when you cut them open!

    I loved the bittersweet marmalade against the sweet nutella - YUM! Your jam sounded superb as well.

  29. I'm sorry your marmalade is too bitter! It does look beautiful. I was amazed how much sugar my marmalade recipe called for...I'm glad you liked the tartine, though. Wine and raspberry jelly sounds absolutely excellent.
